WWII Veteran & Retired Brown University Dept. Chair, Julius W. Kling, Dies

Born on December 22, 1922, in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Julius E. and Eva (Berger) Kling. He graduated from Dumont (NJ) High School in 1940. He worked for the New York Central Railroad for a year before enrolling at the University of Illinois.
He served in World War II as a tank commander in the 8th Armored Division and was awarded two Purple Hearts for his service. He and Jane were married in 1945 and he returned to the U. of I. in 1947. He was awarded his Ph.D. in 1951. He accepted a teaching and research position in the Psychology Department at Brown University that same year. He served as department chair for over ten years and received numerous honors for his academic accomplishments before and after his retirement in 1989.

He is survived by Katherine L. Winter Kozlowski (Alfred), P. Ellen Jost (the late Franz), William S. Kling, and Andrew A. Kling (Laurie Heupel); two grandchildren, Scott F. Winter (Heather) and Elizabeth J. Winter McLauthlin (Andrew); and three great-granddaughters. He was the brother of the late Margaret (Kling) Little of Haworth, NJ.
A memorial service will be held at Central Congregational Church this fall at the convenience of his family.
