WWII Veteran Walter E. Lewis, Sr., of Greenville Dies at 96

Walter E. Lewis, Sr., 96, a resident of Greenville for over 50 years, passed away Friday, August 4, 2023. He was the husband of the late Flora M. (Kelley) Lewis. He was born in Cranston, the son of the late Levi and Bridget M. (Driscoll) Lewis.

 

Mr. Lewis was a manager for B.A. Dario for many years before retiring in 1968. He proudly served his country in the US Army during WWII in Italy during combat and as a peace keeping force. In the 1940’s and 1950’s he was a member of the Harmony Volunteer Fire Department and a racecar driver for Perry’s Garage. Having lived in Greenville for so many years, he was very well-known and a popular man.

He was the father of, Lawrence E. Lewis (Janice), Walter E. Lewis, Jr. (Kim), George J. Lewis (Joseph), Marjorie A. Lewis and the late Donald W. Lewis (Pam). He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

 

Relatives and friends are invited to a graveside service with Military Honors Saturday, August 12, 2023 at 11am in Highland Memorial Park Cemetery, One Rhode Island Ave., Johnston.
