Angel Taveras is scheduled to be one of the first to jump into the proverbial pool of candidates officially running for Governor of Rhode Island in 2014. The first term Mayor of Providence will need to answer a number of significant questions as he first seeks the support of Democrats, but then will face significant GOP and potentially independent opposition in the November general election.

Taveras, who earned points in his first year as Mayor for his handling of the City of Providence's financial melt-down, has lost steam and seems to be getting caught up on personal and petty political fights.

As he emerges as a viable candidate, he will have to break the Providence Mayor's Curse. The last Providence Mayor who was elected Governor was Dennis Roberts in the 1950 election. Truman was President, Ted Williams played for the Red Sox, and sitting Governor Lincoln Chafee would not be born for three years (1953).

Taveras may face General Treasurer Gina Raimondo and her $2 million war chest and Clay Pell who is the grandson of U. S. Senator Claibrone Pell.
