5 Reasons for New Year’s Optimism - Horowitz

For the past 9 years, I’ve written a New Year’s column listing reasons for optimism. (Click here to see how I did last year ) This year I do the same. It remains the nature of news and opinion writing that positive developments get short shrift.

As 2022 is about to begin, 5 reasons for optimism are outlined below:

·      While the Omicron variant is producing a surge in new infections, the result for vaccinated Americans who are now the substantial majority in the nation-- even if contracting a breakthrough case--will mainly be mild symptoms, not hospitalization or death. Over time, the combination of vaccinations and effective new medicines, such as Pfizer’s Paxlovid, will turn COVID-19 into another illness that we know how to prevent and treat.

·      In 2021, the use of renewable energy outpaced fossil fuels across the European Union. Across the globe, renewable, non-carbon producing energy is by far the number one source of new energy production, far exceeding fossil fuels.  Restored United States leadership, after an irresponsible four years of a “heat up the world no matter what” policy under President Trump, led to significant progress on the climate in 2021, and provides a path to limiting global temperature increases sufficiently to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. To be sure, existing trends must be accelerated, but the way forward is well-marked.

·      Expertly led by Representatives Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and Liz Cheney (R-WY), the House January 6 select committee is gaining traction. The combination of televised hearings and the report it will issue in 2022 will serve as a powerful counterpoint of ‘truth” to the former president’s and his allies continuing efforts to flood the country will flagrant falsehoods about the events of that day and the related “Big Lie” that the 2020 election was stolen.

-      Cancer death rates in the United States have steadily declined over the past 20 years or so. This positive trend is likely to continue in 2022 and beyond as we build on our foundation of knowledge and treatments continue to become more effective.

·      The Boss will be back. He is planning to tour with the E Street Band in 2022.  At 72, Bruce Springsteen still has it very much still going on.  If you have never seen him in concert, I highly recommend finding out what you’ve been missing. For those of us who have gone to more than their fair share of Springsteen concerts over the years, we are looking forward to what remains a treat.
