ABC6's "In the Arena" Turns Into a Verbal Brawl Over Achievement First and Providence Schools

Eva Mancuso and Nick Hemond
The big battle over Achievement First as well as a fierce debate over the quality of Providence public schools spilled over into the taping of ABC6’s “In the Arena.”

ABC6’s political talk show hosted by former Providence Mayor Joe Paolino turned into a verbal brawl this week between the defenders of the status quo, which included Providence School Committee Chair Nick Hemond -- and those advocating for Achievement First.

Lines were quickly drawn with Hemond voicing opposition of a major expansion of Achievement First and former RI Board of Education Chair Eva Mancuso and GoLocal CEO Josh Fenton who called for major change in the quality of the Providence School system.

Mancuso said,”Parents are lining up for this (Achievement First)…we can’t wait.”

Hemond however continued to defend the existing structure and argued that it is unfair to compare Providence Schools with alternatives like Achievement First, “They have two teachers in each classroom.” And Paolino argued that maybe that is what is needed - two teachers and better teacher-student ratios.

Ray Rickman and Josh Fenton
Former State Representative Ray Rickman said he was “sick” over the performance of Providence Public Schools for two decades, but that he was opposed to shift resources from Providence schools to Achievement First.

In citing how little confidence was in the existing school system, Fenton pointed out that when the State of Rhode Island made its pitch to lure General Electric's corporate headquarters to Providence, the presentation focused on private prep schools and not RI’s public schools.

“When the Governor put forth the proposal to GE, what education was featured? Moses Brown…not Classical,” said Fenton.
