NEW: Smiley Calls on Solomon to Return $19K from Prov. Employees

Democratic candidate for Mayor of Providence Brett Smiley has called on Providence City Council President and mayoral candidate Michael Solomon to return $19,245 in donations from city workers to his mayoral campaign.

Statement from Smiley

Smiley commented, "Accepting contributions from city employees perpetuates a culture all too familiar in Providence politics in which workers feel obligated to donate in order to secure their jobs. In my administration, city employees will earn their jobs on merit alone with no regard for who they're related to or how much they contribute."

Smiley added, "I've made a pledge not to take any money from city employees and to immediately return any donations I receive, and every other Democratic candidate for Mayor of Providence, with the exception of Michael Solomon, has agreed to this same pledge. I urge Mr. Solomon to do the right thing and refund the $19,245 from city employees already sitting in his campaign war chest."

Smiley has refused, or immediately refunded, every contribution to his campaign from any city employee.
