Candidates Come Out Swinging Following Fung Scandal

Candidates come out swinging following Fung scandal
Just hours after an investigation exposed "irregularities" in rent payments for Cranston Mayor Allan Fung's campaign headquarters, his fellow candidates for governor fired at him, decrying Fung's actions.

The investigation, conducted by WPRI, shows that payments made to the Carpionato Group, which owns the Chapel View location that houses Fung's headquarters, were returned or improperly documented by Fung's campaign, which opponents say violates campaign finance and Board of Elections rules.

Fung has used the Chapel View space for three election cycles. Three payments of $500 each were sent by Fung's campaign in 2016. All three payments were later refunded by Carpionato, which Fung's campaign noted on Board of Elections reports in July 2017. Several other payments were reported refunded as well during the 2014 election cycle. The investigation showed no documented rent payments made during the current campaign.

Joe Trillo, former Republican state representative and independent candidate for governor, said in a statement that Fung is "one of the most dishonest politicians in the state of Rhode Island" and he was therefore unsurprised by the investigation.

"The only thing Allan Fung is sorry for is that he got caught," Trillo said. "His ego is so big that he thinks he can spit in the face of the Board of Elections and the taxpayers of Rhode Island."

Fung claims the issue was primarily due to a clerical error on the part of his campaign team.

Governor Gina Raimondo's campaign, meanwhile, echoed Trillo's statements, saying the issue "points to a pattern of corruption" with Fung, adding his clear financial incompetency in regards to his campaign does not bode well.

"If he can't even manage his campaign's finances, it's no wonder Cranston is in distress," Raimondo said.

The Democratic Governor's Association spoke out against Fung as well, citing the good-government group Common Cause Rhode Island's focus on campaign transparency.

John Marion, the Executive Director of the organization, said campaign finance rules are in place to ensure voters have all necessary information.

"That's premium real estate they're not paying market value for, according to filings," Marion said. "I think that campaign should be paying rent every month and they should be reporting that rent."

According to a recent GoLocalProv statewide poll, seven percent of Rhode Island voters polled said they were "sure" to vote for Fung, compared with 21 percent who said they would never vote for him. SEE THE FULL POLL BELOW.

Nine percent of voters polled said they will be voting for Governor Raimondo, while just one percent say they plan on voting for Trillo.
