Cano Announces RSVP Plan for Seniors in Pawtucket

“The City of Pawtucket is blessed to have an active and vibrant community of retirees and seniors," said Cano. "Many of these individuals would love to be able to give back to their community but have no outlet to accomplish that goal. This program will be designed to match the many skills of our retiree/senior citizenry with the needs of our community.”
Retirees and Seniors Volunteering for Pawtucket
The RSVP plan would include:
1. Work with the Mayor’s office, the School Department and our public employee unions to create a ‘clearinghouse’ of volunteer opportunities for our seniors.
2. Volunteer activities could be coordinated around the following needs:
- Working with the Pawtucket Police Department to expand ‘neighborhood watch’ programs and other safety related programs.
- Working with the School Department to create mentoring / tutorial programs with our students.
- Working with the Housing Authority to expand individual companionship programs and group social events.
- Working with the Public Works Department on ‘clean-up brigades’.
- Working with the Fire Department on child safety programs.
- Working with local child care providers and preschools to teach children to read.
3. Set up a senior task force to explore other potential opportunities for our seniors and avoid any duplication of existing assets.
“Pawtucket is a city with many resource and our retirees and seniors are among our greatest assets," said Cano. "Working with Mayor Grebien, city departments and our unions I’m sure we can put together, at no cost to city residents, a comprehensive program to unlock the many talents of our dedicated retirees and seniors.
"We need to do more without adding to the burden of the taxpayers," Cano continued. "The mayor has led the way with innovative solutions to meet our problems. This RSVP initiative can be another step in making our city better. The one constant I hear from people as I campaign is “how can I help.” This type of volunteer program can be a part of a larger effort to keep our community engaged and thriving.”
