Carcieri ‘Maybe’ Interested in Senate Run

Gov. Don Carcieri yesterday indicated he is opening to running for U.S. Senator against incumbent Sheldon Whitehouse in 2010, according to 630 WPRO, a GoLocalProv media partner.

“No, I don’t rule it out, I think I’ve learned a lot here and I think I have a pretty good understanding of where the nation needs to go,” Carcieri said in an extensive interview with WPRO. The hour-long interview will air in its entirety next month.

“I’ve been very active with the Governor's Association, and I've got a lot of friends considering running for the Presidency in 2012, so whether I help some of them or one of them, there's a lot of different issues that will sort themselves out over the next 6 months,” Carcieri said.

Asked to respond, Whitehouse released the following statement:

“I think it's a little early to be talking about who my opponents might or might not be,” Whitehouse says. “I think ultimately there will be an opponent and we will be prepared to have a vigorous debate, but in the meantime my focus is on trying to keep this economy turned around and trying to get Rhode Island back to where it should be in terms of jobs and economic growth.”
