Ctr for Freedom + Prosperity Issues Statement on Sales Tax Hearing

The main two obstacles holding back significant sales tax reform were on display at Thursday's Sales Tax Commission hearing, according to a statement released today by the nonpartisan Rhode Island Center for Freedom and Prosperity, a Rhode Island free-market advocacy organization.

"It has been our argument all along that pro-growth reforms must include revenue reductions and spending cuts. But last night we saw some commission appointees scoff at the idea, the Providence Chamber of Commerce appointee going so far as to call it a 'crime' to consider doing so. We think it's a crime that so many of our neighbors are unemployed," said Mike Stenhouse, CEO for the nonprofit Center. "This is evidence of exactly what I was talking about at that very moment; that those who defend the status quo are more interested in preserving the size and scope of government than creating job opportunities for Rhode Islanders, and are not open to any bold ideas to the contrary."

The Center was not allowed to present its recently published budget process report, which would have informed commission members about a reasonable approach to managing the state budget under any sales tax reduction scenario.

"It appears we made a few people very uncomfortable yesterday," continued Stenhouse. "While this is not our goal, it is our Center's role to challenge the status quo thinking by engaging in a rigorous debate about ideas. We share in the opinion of many Rhode Islanders that something needs to change on Smith Hill."
