Darrell West Talks DC, Clinton & RI Gov’s Race in Sold Out Speech

“Chris Christie went to the Buddy Cianci school of public policy,” quipped Darrell West, Rhode Island’s favorite political pundit and Vice President at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC as he gave a sweeping presentation on politics to a full house at Newport Art Museum.

West took the audience through a review of the political battles in Washington and trends, a prognostication of the 2014 congressional elections, and a preview of the 2016 Presidential race.

Rise of Progressives

West outlined that one of the new winners in U.S. politics are progressives. According to West, for the past 20 years most major U.S. cities have sought fiscal conservatives to try and right their cities’ fiscal wrongs. However, West said the election of Bill de Blasio in New York City and Marty Walsh in Boston are two examples of urban centers pushing to the left.

2014 Congressional Elections

While 2006 was a big election cycle for the Democrats and 2010 saw the emergence of the GOP behind Tea Party forces, 2014 may be a status quo election, according to West.

"The GOP should have three to four more seats in the Senate, but they nominated a number of "crazy people" who were not competitive,” said West, “Harry Reid should have lost his seat.”

2016 Presidential Campaign

West outlined an emerging tension in the Democratic party ahead of the 2016 Presidential election, and said that while Hillary Clinton is the front runner, progressives have concerns about her and with their emerging power this could impact Clinton’s candidacy.

“There is now an emerging tension between centrists, who have run the Democratic party for the past 20 years, and liberal and progressives who are now an emerging power,” said West.

Closer to Home

Asked about the 2014 Governor’s campaign in Rhode Island, West predicted that Clay Pell was the wildcard in the Governor’s race, as a candidacy by Pell would adversely affect the campaign of Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and potentially provide a positive boost to Gina Raimondo’s candidacy for Governor. He also called the GOP race between Cranston Mayor Allan Fung and former Moderate Party founder Ken Block highly competitive and functionally a toss up.

West has a new book coming out in June, Billionaires: Reflections on the Upper Crust. It will be published by Brookings Institution Press.
