Democratic Party Attacks Former Democratic Governor Chafee

Democratic party spokesperson and former party chair Bill Lynch released the following statement today in response to Lincoln Chafee’s "recent selective memory lapses during his walk down memory lane."

Chafee had recently raised questions about Governor Gina Raimondo's record.

“With his odd appearances on various media outlets in recent weeks, including (seriously) Russia Today, Lincoln Chafee seems strangely desperate to revise his own failed legacy as a one-term Governor.  Chafee, unable to muster a legitimate re-election campaign, limped out of office with an approval rating in the 20’s.  He proved himself incapable of reviving Rhode Island’s economy and by the end of his term, Rhode Island’s unemployment rate had climbed to the highest in the nation.”

"Instead of fighting for working families by dedicating his office to helping existing businesses expand and attracting new businesses to relocate here, Chafee’s strategy instead hinged on the metric system.  As our own version of the Grinch, Chafee actually sought to abolish Christmas trees and replace them with holiday trees while issues of substance languished.”

“It is very disappointing to see Chafee’s personal petulant animosity toward Governor Raimondo manifest itself in these on-going inaccurate misrepresentations.  Mr. Chafee spent his entire term as Governor acting like, in his own words, ‘a block of granite’ while Rhode Islanders got left behind.”

“When Mr. Chafee left office, as one of the most unpopular Governor’s in America, it was because of two words:  job performance.  Now he’s attacking the progress Rhode Island has made in the two and one-half years since he left, including the creation of 12,000 new jobs and a state unemployment rate at its lowest point since 2001.”
