Don Roach: Obama Goes on the Offensive

Last night, President Barak Obama delivered his 2014 State of the Union address. Two words encapsulate his comments – economy and offense. Let’s start with the latter. The president didn’t mince words when talking about the success we have enjoyed over the past several years and where he believes we should be headed. He spoke about having the highest graduation rates ever, lowest unemployment rates in 5 years, creating 8 million jobs, and ending wars that we have been waging over the past twelve years.

Listening to the President you might forget that Rhode Island has the worst unemployment rates in the country. Might…

He also said Congress can either “help or hinder” the progress. In other words, he told Congress to get on the bus or move out of his way. He made no apologies throughout the speech and I noted that when he entered Congress, he entered like a starting basketball point guard dapping up the crowd and his teammates. It was very informal and certainly did not reflect an attitude of pessimism at all. Gone is the Obama who apologized for the failings of the Obamacare rollout.

You’d think that while he was on the offensive, he’d take a few shots at Republicans but I didn’t hear him single out Republicans all that often (with a notable exception when he spoke about unemployment insurance) but a number of times he highlighted the need to move on from stale political arguments. From a perception standpoint, America is certainly tired of partisanship and the President has definitely been a band leader on the division that continues to build in this country. Thus, while his word choice was certainly measured let’s see what he does tomorrow, next week, next month to determine if he’s for real about making Congress work again.

I trusted this President in 2008; I won’t make that mistake again. He’s going to need to show us that he is more than a great speech deliverer.

The economy

The second major theme of the State of the Union was the economy, economy, economy. Obama made his case for increasing minimum wage by saying he would require federal contractors to pay their employees around $10 an hour in order to do business with the federal government. He told Congress to “Say Yes, give America a raise.”

He called on Congress to restore unemployment insurance for those whom Congress did not extend earlier this month. He also talked about reducing the salary gap between men and women. He even talked about tax breaks for corporations who keep jobs in America.

Again, as I listened to the speech most of what Obama said sounded great. From preparing America for a 21st century economy to giving breaks to corporations that keep jobs in the states, Obama tried to make Americans feel great about the economy and where it’s headed.

As I said, I’m not drinking kool-aid till I taste the sugar, as it were and I really don’t believe you should either. Obama gave a well delivered speech, but it doesn’t change what we’re facing here in Rhode Island and it certainly doesn’t mean there will be less partisanship in Congress.

Instead, Obama has set the agenda for 2014 and it’s about putting people back to work. We’ve heard all of this from Obama before, what we need is less talk and more action.

I’m going to wait and see, but I’m not holding my breath – not with this President and not after so many broken promises.
