Fecteau: Raimondo’s Sanctuary City Tightrope

Certain progressive Democrats have taken umbrage to Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo's moderation on the sanctuary city policy. In an interview on WGBH, Raimondo said she may not be willing to lose federal funding of $3 billion dollars because of Providence’s alleged sanctuary city status. In Raimondo’s defense, she said it depends on the “details.” She handled this issue much better than Providence mayor Jorge Elorza that recklessly claimed Providence is a sanctuary city even though not in the federal government’s cross hairs.

Raimondo is walking a tightrope, trying to pacify those on the left, and those on the right. I don’t think she will ever pacify her progressive Democrat critics, and will not win any support from the Republican wing. The independents will agree with her pragmatism. Her approval rating is low, and remains stagnant, and will not dramatically increase because of this latest decision.

In the past, I criticized Mrs. Raimondo and urged someone to challenge her in the Democratic primary to offer the voters a choice – something many primaries lack. I was disappointed with her inaccessibility, failure to deliver on key progressive promises, poor investment decisions as State Treasurer, and her support of the dreaded toll plan.

While not perfect, Raimondo deserves credit on the undocumented immigration ban. She isn’t willing to throw away federal aid for ideological purposes – cannot say that for Elorza. I certainly don’t agree with the immigration ban (I’ve written about it already), but with everything, it matters about the details and the context. Raimondo should cooperate to a degree (statistically speaking, immigrants commit fewer crimes anyway). If it comes to undocumented criminals who committed violent felonies or Rhode Islanders, I will pick Rhode Islanders at every turn. That is common sense.

However, cooperation has its limits. Raimondo should not give Mr. Trump carte blanche authority, innocent victims and their families face a significant threat of being ripped apart. In addition, many undocumented immigrants come to the United States looking for a better a life asking little in return. Raimondo should fight any federal policy risks hurting innocent people yearning for a better life. That would be un-American.

Raimondo is taking the logical, yet methodical approach to governance and that can turn off the ideological left. We need sensible solutions when Republicans control both the executive branch, legislative, and may soon even dominate the judiciary. In today's ambiguous times, Raimondo deserves credit for her pragmatic stance on the immigration ban because both money and lives are at stake.
