Former State Rep Don Lally Resigns from Gov's Office Position

Former Rep Lally, under cloud of ethics review
Former Narragansett State Representative Don Lally who is the subject of an ethics inquiry for taking a job with the Governor's office -- a potential violation of the revolving door statute that prohibits legislators from taking a state job within a year of leaving office -- has submitted his resignation.

At the time of the appointment in September of 2015, Governor Gina Raimondo was widely criticized for doing an end-a-round of the "revolving-door" ban by giving Lally an $87,057 a year job on the Governor's staff and then "loaning" him to an appointment at the RI Department of Business Regulation. Business Regulation is the regulatory agency of businesses in Rhode Island.

In March of 2015, Lally mysteriously resigned from the House in the middle of the session.

His resignation was effective immediately.

In a formal letter of resignation delivered Tuesday to Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello, Representative Lally said, “I have been deliberating on whether or not to continue in my present position as Rhode Island State Representative for District 33.  I decided that it is time for me to step down. … My constituents in Narragansett and South Kingstown deserve to have a representative who has the enthusiasm, energy, commitment, and burning desire to represent them throughout the entire year.  This legislative body is not a part-time legislature.  It has become a year-round commitment.”

“Recently, I lost both of my parents and it led me to reflect upon how important family truly is,” wrote Representative Lally in his resignation letter, saying that at this time he wishes to devote more time to his wife and two children and to his law practice.

Raimondo appointed Lally to her staff in potential violation of "Revolving Door" statute
Just a few months later he was on the Raimondo team. The Republicans filed a complaint with the Ethics Commission in October. Lally is scheduled to have a hearing for the Commission next week.
