Gencarella: Truth or Dare, RI Style

Wait, What?

RI is a state on the rise, according to our first female governor.  At least that’s what she told the viewers on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.  And while the governor’s next statement was that RI’s “unemployment rate dropped an awful lot last year,",  the reality is that just a couple of weeks ago, CNBC dropped RI from 48th to dead last for business friendliness, a primary reason - a weak economy.  The Governor’s spokesperson said it was disappointing but not surprising.  But for Rhode Islanders, what is surprising is that she would say RI is a state on the rise in the face of an absolutely dismal recovery since 2008.  Eight years later, RI’s business climate says it all.

Reality Check.

Yet many condemned the RI GOP chairman, Brandon Bell, for speaking the truth on national TV when presenting the republican delegation’s vote for the presidential nomination.  Mr. Bell said  that “government is not working for the people in RI.  ….the state is run by a corrupt Democrat political machine…and we are constantly ranked near the bottom, recently ranked 50th worst in terms of business-friendly climate.  Democratic leadership in our state has been rampant corruption, lack of transparency, and unethical conduct.”

As the jailed former Speaker Fox is still fresh in our mind; as we watched the Tolls pass against the public will; as we watched the unfolding events surrounding the disgraced House Finance Chairman, Ray Gallison; as we watched the embattled House Finance Vice-Chairman, John Carnevale, go down in flames over his fraudulent claim about his Providence residence; as we are now watching the political maneuvers to maintain secrecy over 38 Studios - the biggest debacle in a decade - do any Rhode Islanders think that Mr. Bell said anything out of line?

The Truth Hurts And It’s Embarrassing.  But You Can’t Make Changes If You Don’t First Admit There Is A Problem.

The RI Democratic Chairman, Representative McNamara, said it was an opportunity missed, when Bell took “cheap political shots” against the Ocean State. Those shots weren’t ‘cheap’, they were the truth.  Why isn’t Mr. McNamara embarrassed that what Mr. Bell said is the sad reality in RI?

And why would the Governor go on national TV and say RI is on the rise when it just dropped two spots in a national survey that indicates we are not only in trouble, but we are worse off than last year?  Probably for the same reason that she said “GE just put a big facility in Providence”.  What big facility you might ask?  Last we knew, GE was renting a suite on the 7th floor of 10 Dorrance Street in Providence!

And then there was the other RI issue MSNBC host Brzezinski alluded to.  When she mistook Raimondo for a republican she embarrassingly said “for some reason, I thought because of some things that had gone in…..Rhode Island with the budget… http://www.providencejournal.com/news/20160728/tv-co-host-mistakenly-refers-to-raimondo-as-republican-governor."  What was she trying to say?

Maybe she remembered hearing about the governor telling the National Association of Governors that “For too long, what’s happened in RI….is the governor proposes a budget and then the General Assembly takes the budget - often in the dark of night, in a quiet room - the lobbyists and the General Assembly get together and they hack it up every which way and out pops a budget.”  Was Brzezinski implying that she assumed it was a republican exposing the unethical budget process in RI, that a fellow democrat would never expose the lack of transparency in her own democrat legislature?

It Wasn’t All That Long Ago.

According to the a report, Raimondo, in her first days as governor, called state spending ‘alarming’, ‘scary’ and ‘out-of-whack’, but where is she today?  Championing the worst piece of public policy the state has seen in decades - Truck Tolling that will eventually lead to tolls on all vehicles, allowing unfettered spending in the RI DOT.   And as a candidate, Raimondo called for an independent investigation of 38 Studios, but where is she today?  Passing the buck, relying on conflicted Attorney General Kilmartin to decide to close the case so documents can be released.

Who Will Dare To Tell The Truth?

So for the next two years don’t expect much in the way of positive change from the governor because she is clearly looking through glasses with a different color lens than  the rest of us and from the lens she had on as a candidate and new governor.

And don’t expect much change from Speaker Mattiello if he is re-elected.  Calling for release of the 38 Studios documents when the investigation is closed is like waiting for RI to be catapulted to the top half of the CNBC ranking of states - it might happen, but we will all be dead and buried by then.  Remember, it’s an election year for Mattiello and promises from him are probably like the promises from Raimondo - they melt away in the RI reality where one dares not expose the truth.
