The invite to Sara Gideon's fundraiser in Providence.
Top Democratic elected officials in Rhode Island are headlining a fundraiser on Friday for Rhode Island native Sara Gideon, who is looking to unseat Republican Susan Collins in the United States Senate in the 2020 election.

As GoLocalProv previously reported, Maine Speaker of the House Gideon announced her bid to unseat Collins in June.

"Projected to be the most expensive in Maine’s history, the race is of imperative importance for party leaders and the Senate institution itself. With scarce opportunities elsewhere, Senate Democrats essentially need Gideon to win to gain a minimum of three seats and the majority," reported Burgess Everett for Politico in August. "In the Senate, a Collins loss would be a potentially fatal blow to the reeling center of the chamber."

The fundraiser will take place on Friday, October 18 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the home of Hilary Levey Friedman and John Friedman.

The address will be given upon RSVP.

About Gideon -- and Collins Battle

Gideon grew up in East Greenwich and served as an intern on the staff of the late U.S. Senator Claiborne Pell.

As GoLocal wrote, Collins may be the last of the New England moderate Republicans — a group that used to be a major political force in New England and in the United States Senate. Collins once teamed with fellow moderate Maine U.S. Senator Olympia Snow and other moderate Senators like Lincoln Chafee to create a centrist voice in the Senate.

Collins is under fire for supporting President Donald Trump on a number of key votes including the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Gideon said in her announcement, "I’m running against Susan Collins for U.S. Senate because Mainers deserve a senator who will always put our state first."

"One of the reasons why Senator Collins has been so effective is that she has more seniority than any U.S. senator from Maine over the past 70 years. She will continue to build on her record of extraordinary accomplishments for the people of Maine,” said Collins office in a statement.
