GOP Chairman Voices ‘Grave Concern’ Over Voting Irregularities
State GOP Chairman Giovanni Cicione said he was outraged over reports that unaffiliated and Republican voters had been denied the chance to vote in the Republican primary. He called on the Board of Elections, Attorney General, and State Police to launch a joint investigation into claims that voters had been disenfranchised and provided with false information by election workers.
“Clearly there is a problem,” Cicione said. “When we heard one or two reports of people being denied Republican ballots, we were willing to accept those reports as indications of isolated incidences. Given the numerous reports we have heard and the detailed accounts of voters being told that there was no Republican Primary election today, there is ample reason to believe this situation goes well beyond an honest mistake.”
“A full investigation is necessary, and simply asking the Board of Elections to police themselves is not sufficient,” Cicione added. “We are calling for a full investigation of reported violations, and it should be conducted jointly be representatives of the Board of Elections, the Attorney General’s office, and the Rhode Island State Police.”
