RI Gubernatorial Candidate Herrera Builds App to Promote His Campaign’s Focus on Education

Herrera's app
Rey Herrera has the most unusual bio of any of the candidates running for governor in 2022 in Rhode Island.

Four of the leading Democratic candidates have spent the majority of their adult life in politics. There is a former corporate CEO that has made upward of $100 million in her career. And, the Republicans don’t have a candidate.

In contrast, Herrera, who has been homeless at times during his life and announced he is running for governor in November, has built an app to communicate his political positions.

He has promised a focus on modernizing the state's underperforming education system by pushing forward with technology and instruction leveraging virtual reality.

"My main focuses will be the educational system which is ranked dead last in New England and in the lower bracket of the United States. Can you imagine your child doing his chemical experiments with Albert Einstein or Shakespeare, teaching them to write so elegantly? Virtual reality has the capabilities to do this and it's time our educational system catches up to technology because the seeds we plant today will be the trees tomorrow," said Herrera.

He officially filed his declaration papers for office in January. He is running as an independent.

On his new app he writes, “Why did I decide to run for governor? Fear! I'm scared. I’m scared my son will come into the workforce and not get that American dream he was promised! I’m scared he will suffer the same mental health issues killing my generation every day! I’m scared his school system will fail him and then tell him he’s falling behind.”

See the app here. It will be available for both Google and Apple platforms.

“When he’s being left behind! I’m scared that if we don’t change today my son doesn’t have a future! I have spent endless nights thinking, how can I make a world I'm not afraid of! And that fear turned into ambition. I harnessed into this creation. The stage of the pupa is ugly but we will one day be beautiful again and fly here ‘IN RI,’” he adds.
