Guest MINDSETTER™ Deckman: Will Morgan’s Innovations and Invitations Reinvigorate RI?

Patricia Morgan
Rhode Islanders have heard gubernatorial candidates from all parties promise to clean up government corruption, waste, and fraud for decades. Yet once they got elected none of them seem able to change anything.

As a result, many Rhode Islanders believe this problem will never be solved.

But, every problem has a solution. Even the ones that seem intractable.

In many ways, I make my living as a problem solver. Experience has taught me that 4 key components must be present in order to solve highly complex problems. If these components are present everything changes. Without even one of them, nothing changes.

Those components are:

  • Innovative thinking
  • Determination, commitment and courage
  • Imagination, wisdom and knowledge
  • Trusted, respected and fearless leadership

Over the past week, Patricia Morgan has revealed a strategy to solve the waste and fraud problems that have been plaguing our state for decades. Based upon what I am hearing on talk radio and “on the street” her strategy is causing people to actually think the impossible might just be possible.

That strategy involves inviting Arlene Violet, Ken Block and John Robitaille to join her administration, if she is elected Governor, to begin turning the state around. All have responded very favorably to her invitation

The creation of what many are calling the “Dream Team” to lead the resurgence of Rhode Island is not only unprecedented, it also brings together all 4 of the components necessary to solve seemingly unsolvable problems.

Below is my take on how her actions fit the model.

Innovation

Her biggest innovation is the combination of taking a 3-pronged approach to the problem and then recruiting well recognized and highly respected Rhode Island to help lead the charge.

The first prong creates the office of the Inspector General to begin aggressively targeting and investigating areas of waste and fraud in state government. To insure the office has teeth and is above reproach she has asked Arlene Violet to lead it. This will immediately send a chill down the spine of many.

The second prong involves aggressively using technology and extensive data mining to assist the Governor and the Inspector General’s office in their pursuits. Accepting Ken Block’s offer to tackle the TDI program, for free, is an excellent start and Ken is the perfect person to lead that initiative. He is a brilliant data miner and hates waste.

The third prong involves building a solid economy. Stopping waste and fraud without kick-starting our economy will not lead us to prosperity.

The decision to redesign CommerceRI to focus our resources on supporting, promoting and nurturing our existing small business economy, instead of chasing high priced corporate butterflies, not only plays to our existing economic strengths but it also takes care of Rhode Islanders first. 93% of the businesses in Rhode Island are small businesses and 62% of Rhode Islanders work for small businesses.

Selecting John Robitaille to lead that transformation guarantees that Rhode Islanders will have someone who knows our economy building our economy.

Commitment, Courage, and Determination

The four-person team of Morgan, Violet, Block, and Robitaille represent a powerhouse of seasoned and committed reformers. Each has repeatedly demonstrated the courage to publicly lead the charge for reform and each has shown a relentless determination to fight against all odds and all powerbrokers to make a difference.

Imagination, Wisdom and Knowledge

All four have proven they have new ideas that will break the old mold. Each has already demonstrated they have the maturity and wisdom to lead. And each is extremely knowledgeable in their areas of expertise.

  • Patricia is an expert on the budget. She knows how the statehouse works and why it doesn’t.
  • Arlene found a way to break the back of organized crime. I am certain she will find her way through the maze of deceit plaguing our budget.
  • Ken is extremely adept at using technology to uncover waste and fraud in governments. His processes have saved Texas more than $1 billion.
  • John is a seasoned, respected business owner and was the Executive Director at the Johnson and Wales Center for Entrepreneurship. He achieved national recognition for the center during his tenure. He also happened to come within 2 percentage points of becoming governor himself in 2010.

Trusted, Respected and Fearless leadership

Each has spent years and even decades fighting to protect the average Rhode Islander. Each has publicly led the charge against the entrenched, the unscrupulous and the unethical who conspire to use us as their perpetual patsies to feed their egos and their excesses.

I think that the only thing more impressive than her 3 pronged approach is the team she has assembled to lead it.

With that being said I am reminded of two Einstein quotes:

  • “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
  • “Imagination is more important than knowledge.”

Both of these quotes speak to the need for and the unbelievable impact of using INNOVATION to solve our problems and improve our lives.

But embracing innovation takes courage. The interesting question I have is whether or not the voters in the Republican primary will vote for something new in order to get something new.
