Having Said That - John DePetro

  • Whoever will be the next governor must have a plan to deal with the state pension problem. There is no time for endless studies, commissions, or panels. The solution is simple: state and cities employee's must move into a 401k. Period, end of discussion. The state needs surgery, not a Band-Aid.
  • The people who live, work and pay taxes in Arizona do not seem to be complaining about the new illegal immigration law.
  • I am not sure former PC coach Tim Welch has started out on the right foot with his new job. You can take the boy out of Providence...
  • Best campaign slogan for 2010 so far is Victor Moffit for Governor, with "Vote for Moffit and Rhode Island will Profit."
  • Jeremy Kapstein against Liz Roberts is almost not a fair fight.
  • For anyone looking for liberal bias in the media, look no further than the oil spill.  President Obama has totally mishandled the situation, yet there would be talk of impeachment against President Bush.
  • I will never understand people from P.E.T.A. who proudly announce they are pro-choice.
  • A report out of D.C. had Patrick Kennedy doing 6 vodka shots at a local bar. Wasn’t he the guy complaining about “no press”? That is one way to get it.
  • Congrats to the band "Neutral Nation" who have a movie about their time on the music scene in the late 80's. I worked at the  "Living Room," in the mid-80's  and they were always fun to watch.
  • Remember when spring in Providence meant recent colleges graduates, walking around downtown, interviewing with different businesses.  The people I see wandering around downtown these days do not seem to be looking for a job.
  • Only in Rhode Island is a flood considered by some people to be one form of economic development.
  • This week in Rhode Island history, May 7, 1993, coffee milk becomes the official drink of Rhode Island by a vote of 49-36 in the house. Del's was the loser.
  • I never remember the roads this bad in Rhode Island. I do not mean potholes, but collapsing roads. I met a soldier who just got back from Iraq who said the roads here are worse.
  • The NCAA March weekend was fun in Providence, and made it feel like a real city.
  • Tiger Woods better hope his wife does not run into Sandra Bullock.
  • Could someone remind me again why the mayor of Central Falls, which is one square mile, needs a spokesperson? Does it even need a mayor?
  • Let’s see Jeremy Kapstein or Liz Roberts for Lt. Governor? Kapstein was a military judge, CEO of the San Diego Padres, and is one of the most respected people in sports. Roberts issued an umbrella warning during the flood. Tough choice.
  • Jon Stewart, of Comedy Central, has become the number one critic of Fox News Channel. The rule in politics and talk radio remain the same: it is always easier to attack than defend.
  • TV alert: This Thursday night (May 6) I will be a guest on the Sean Hannity show at 9 p.m. on Fox News Channel.
  • Six vodka shots?
  • Arizona has five hundred thousand illegals living there, which is half the population of Rhode Island. Problem? What problem?
  • North Providence Mayor Charlie Lombardi has more courage and backbone than all of the leadership on Smith Hill combined. It would take a lot more than some loud firefighters to deter that mayor.
  • If Patrick Kennedy keeps this up, he will be one vodka shot away from joining the cast of "Jersey Shore." We know he can fist pump, but he is ready for gym, tan, laundry?
  • Unless something changes, the match up for governor seems to remain Chafee vs. Caprio.
  • Joe Paolino may run for mayor of Providence as an Independent, and Linc Chafee is running for governor as an Independent. Could this be the year of the Independent, or the year of older wealthy guys who have lost and don't like primaries?
  • "Crazy Heart" is out on DVD and is the best music movie I have seen since “Purple Rain."
  • I spoke with Craig Robinson, former coach at Brown, on WPRO the other day about his new book. He is articulate, smart, a class act, and brother-in law to President Obama. PC ignored him to try and lure Rick "table for 2" Pitino back. Hmmm....
  • American Idol was better with Paula Abdul. Ellen and the other woman are boring.
  • In a new poll, Attorney General Patrick Lynch has higher negatives in Rhode Island than Elliot Spitzer has negatives in New York. How are things with the Lynch campaign?
  • In a recent WPRO poll, 82 percent of the people of Rhode Island believe Adam Emery is still alive.
  • Congrats to the Pride of Pawtucket, Dave Gosher, who is doing a great job as the voice of the Boston Bruins.
  • Having said that, there is no place like Rhody.

John DePetro can be heard each weekday morning from 6-10am on WPRO 630AM and 99.7FM.
