EXCLUSIVE: Jon Scott to Run for Providence Mayor

Jon Scott, a two-time Republican challenger to Congressman Patrick Kennedy, announced today that he was running as an independent for mayor of Providence.

Scott said he will maintain his affiliation with the GOP but was running as an independent because of how few Republicans there are in Providence. "In a city which has less than 7 percent Republicans (registered), it's virtually impossible to get elected as a Republican," Scott said.

The current Republican candidate for mayor is Dan Harrop, a friend of Scott's who serves with him on the board of directors for the Ocean State Policy Research Institute. "Dan has always been one of my greatest supporters and I look forward to his support in the future despite today's situation," Scott said.
