Marijuana Tax Bill Presented to Senate Committee

A bill calling for Rhode Island to tax and regulate marijuana like alcohol will be heard by The Rhode Island Senate Committee on Judiciary Tuesday.

Senator Joshua Miller (D-Cranston), Chairman of the Senate Committee on health and Human Services, is leading the bill, which has a total of 13 sponsors.  Senate Bill S 2379 would allow adults 21 and over to possess limited amounts of marijuana, with advocates proclaiming it could raise millions in tax revenue for the state.

“Marijuana prohibition has been an enormous and costly failure,” said Jared Moffat, director of Regulate Rhode Island. “Regulating and taxing marijuana similarly to alcohol will create a new source of jobs and revenue, both of which are sorely needed in Rhode Island.”
