NEW: McKee, Regunberg Battle Over "Fake News" Ads

Lt. Governor Dan McKee is accusing Aaron Regunberg of making "fake news" - and Regunberg's camp is fighting back.
Lieutenant Governor Dan McKee is blasting Democratic primary opponent Aaron Regunberg for what he said was doctoring a picture in a recent WPRI news story with a fake headline, before Regunberg swapped out the original post for a new one.

McKee's campaign showed what the Regunberg ad -- linked to WPRI story titled, "Switching to a Competitive Power Supplier Could Cost You, Data Shows" -- originally looked like, before it was changed.

“Last week my opponent intentionally replaced a headline of a recent WPRI story and advertised it on Facebook in an attempt to disinform and deceive voters," said McKee. "The result was a completely false allegation under WPRI’s call letters which was repackaged and distributed to the public as legitimate news."

Regunberg's camp, however, fired right back.

"This is a wild claim, even for Dan McKee. Here are the facts: WPRI reported that the electricity suppliers that McKee has been using taxpayer dollars to promote overcharged Rhode Island customers by $28 million in recent years, and we shared the online link to this story on Facebook. It's outrageous that in McKee's four years he passed just one piece of legislation, a handout to the same companies that the state of Massachusetts is trying to ban for predatory practices - and McKee knows it’s wrong. So in classic Trump fashion, he's trying to distract from his record by making things up, even using Trump's own charge of "fake news" to distract from the very real news that he's been aiding the overcharging of vulnerable Rhode Island ratepayers. This is just another example of why Rhode Islanders deserve new leadership in the lieutenant governor's office," said Jake London, Regunberg's Campaign Manager.

McKee released the following statement:

I am disgusted that my opponent has resorted to doctoring news headlines to try and fool Rhode Islanders. These tactics have no place in Rhode Island politics, and certainly not in one of the highest offices in our state. This Trump-like campaign tactic was used to deceive voters into thinking that Aaron Regunberg’s doctored headline was a legitimate news headline put out by a legitimate news source. His blatant misuse of facts is a disappointment to every Democrat who has called out President Trump for his lies.”

My opponent’s actions are the definition of how social media can be used to deceive voters, undermine legitimate media sources and how Russian influences caused havoc in the Trump/Clinton election.

While my opponent has been intentionally fabricating false news headlines and doctoring photos to distort my positions in his campaign advertising, I have been talking to Rhode Islanders about my record of fighting the opiate crisis, taking on National Grid over rate increases, and helping create an economy and education system that works for everyone.”

Facebook Ads

McKee's camp said the first ad, on the left, was what they took issue with -- before it was changed to a version without Channel 12 imagery, on the right.  "Regunberg took down his fake news after being forced to do so by WPRI," said McKee's camp.

Regunberg’s Previous Issues

As GoLocalProv has previously reported, Regunberg has had prior issues with campaign ads.

In March, a campaign email Regunberg claimed he will not accept any money from the “NRA and gun lobby” and he wants to “turn New Mexico blue” a reference to making New Mexico -- not Rhode Island - -- a Democratic state.

Jake London from Regunberg's campaign told GoLocal that the error was inadvertent. "We copied over as part of our fundraising software and it did not get caught."
