1.  What do you think is the biggest political issue this campaign season in Rhode Island?

The biggest political issue this campaign season is education. I truly believe it is the civil rights issue of our time. In Washington Park and the South Side, especially, we must do better. We need to prepare our children to succeed by ensuring that they have the materials they need, by letting the parents have a real voice in how their child is educated, by making sure that our schools are no longer crumbling but instead inspire creativity, and by working with our teachers so they have the tools and flexibility they need to make learning fun.

2.  What do we need to do to improve Rhode Island's economy?

The only way to improve Rhode Island's economy is by putting people back to work. In District 12, our unemployment rate is still in the double digits. We have not recovered as well as other parts of the state, and we need a representative who recognizes this and is willing to advocate for the type of reforms - sales tax reform, getting rid of tolls, empowering small businesses, and making sure everyone pays their fair share - that are necessary for our district to thrive.

3.  What is the greatest challenge facing Rhode Island as a state?

The greatest challenge we face as a state is stagnation. Rhode Islanders are so tired of hearing the same old arguments from the same people - people who have been at the State House for 20 years and sat on their hands - that they have thrown their hands in the air. We need new leadership, we need to change direction, and we need to make Rhode Island a place that people look at and say "I want to start a family here". Rhode Island is beautiful, and right now our beauty has been covered by a cloud of corruption and scandals. Once we get out from under it, we will rightly shine.

4.  Why are you running for office? What makes you uniquely qualified?

I am running for office because as me and my wife begin planning our family, we want to give our future children the greatest opportunity to succeed in this beautiful neighborhood and state we call home. I want to help setup our community for success by being open and honest through monthly community meetings, and I believe my unique community-focused mindset is what sets me apart from my opponent, Joseph Almeida, who was found guilty of stealing over $6,000 in yet another State House scandal last year. I believe the South Side deserves better than someone who shows a complete disrespect for their community by breaking their trust and stealing, and that is why I am running.

5.  Who is your inspiration?

My inspiration is my parents, who sacrificed so much to see me succeed. I was born in Puerto Rico when my parents were 20 years old, and my parents saved at less than $3 an hour to move to Rhode Island and grow their family. While raising me and my two siblings, they worked extra hours and long trips to ensure that we got the best education possible. This included putting us through private school after the 7th grade when it was clear that the Providence Public School system was not meeting the standards expected of them in standardized test scores. I was the first in my family to go to a four-year college, and I owe all of my success to them.

Vargas, who lives at 139 California Avenue, is a 23 year old community activist, is recently married, and studied Legal Studies and Political Science at Roger Williams University.
