The biggest issue facing Rhode Island continues to be the need to develop higher paying jobs for workers and improving the economy overall.  The state must also develop an educational system that eliminates achievement disparities and meets the needs of a 21st century workforce that will enhance economic opportunity for all Rhode Islanders.

2.  What do we need to do to improve Rhode Island's economy?

Rhode Island’s economy can be improved by continuing to help small businesses and our micro-enterprises,with the technical and financial resources to succeed, and by lowering taxes and fees that inhibit overall business growth. We should look, too, at how we can attract supply chain businesses to successful RI businesses such as Amgen, Raytheon, Hasbro and Dussaulte Systems Simulia; and help launch businesses emerging from our world-class college and university research centers. And continue to promote our local tourism, which supports an untold number of small businesses and attracts visitors year-round.

3.  What is the greatest challenge facing Rhode Island as a state?

The greatest challenges to our state include educating our workforce to transition from its traditional turn-of-the-century manufacturing to a high-tech, globalized knowledge-based economy.  We must work harder to improve all areas of public education, including eliminating the academic achievement disparities that exist in our urban schools.  Furthermore, our vocational and technical schools should be closely aligned with the workforce needs of our local Rhode Island companies.  I also believe that Rhode Island could be much more productive in the development of medical technology, and it is an area I will continue to work on through legislative reforms.

4.  Why are you running for office?

I am running for office to offer my constituents a voice in the Rhode Island House of Representatives that will have a laser focus on the needs of the 19th district, and to improve economic opportunities and the quality of life for all of the citizens of the state.

5.  Who is your inspiration?

President John F. Kennedy had a tremendous influence on me.  His call to duty on his presidential inauguration impacted not just me but my entire generation. It is why, today, I continue to view public service as an important element of a successful life and integral to our democracy.
