1.  What do you think is the biggest political issue this campaign season in Rhode Island?

Preserving the character and quality of life in our community through protection of our environment, affordable health care and a high performing education system are priorities for everyone and are important issues that the residents of Newport and Jamestown are deeply concerned about.  However, the ongoing growth of our economy and our ability to innovate is the most important issue we face.

2.  What do we need to do to improve Rhode Island's economy?

We need to continue to position our state competitively in terms of tax and regulatory climate, while also making the necessary investments to improve our education system and training programs so Rhode Islanders are prepared for the jobs of a modern economy. Initiatives such as the one the Senate put forward this year, Grow Green Jobs RI, will serve to promote growth in particular sectors, while broad improvements help attract business growth across the spectrum.

3.  What is the greatest challenge facing Rhode Island as a state?

Education and the development of job skills through employee training programs is one of the greatest challenges facing our state.  Newport County is leading the state in such areas as the maritime and defense economy.  One of the most important resources that these sectors depend upon is a steady stream of educated hardworking employees.  We need to continue our commitment to funding for education at both the higher and lower education levels to address the needs of our students and the demands of the workplace.

4.  Why are you running for office? What makes you uniquely qualified?

I have been involved with our community my entire life.  Whether I am walking the Cliff Walk or sitting under the pavilion at Fort Getty, I cannot help but think how fortunate I am to call Newport home.  My understanding of the issues that are important to Newport and Jamestown is important however I have demonstrated that I have the ability to effectively work together with others on a statewide level to achieve results.  I am honored that residents of Newport and Jamestown have placed their trust in me to fight for the issues that are important to all of us.

5.  Who is your inspiration?

My parents are my greatest inspiration.  I learned from them the importance of community involvement.  As children, my parents were, and they still are, active in our community improving the lives of others.  The importance of family and faith was part of our everyday lives.  They worked hard and sacrificed to ensure my brothers and I had the opportunity to go to college and they encouraged us to follow our dreams.
