NEW: Sam Bell Declares for Fox's House Seat

Sam Bell of Providence announced Monday that he will seek the Democratic nomination for State Representative in the House District 4 seat being vacated by outgoing Representative and former Speaker Gordon Fox.

Fox has represented the seat on the Upper East Side of Providence since 1992, but recently announced that his current term would be his last. Last week, Fox's State House office and home were raided by the FBI and IRS

“Our state needs a fresh Democratic voice on Smith Hill,” said Bell. “As Representative, I’ll fight to invest in our schools and our workforce, and I’ll be an unfailing advocate for transparency and sunlight at the State House.”

Bell is a graduate student at Brown University and the leader of the Rhode Island chapter of the Progressive Democrats of America. In late 2013 and early 2014 Bell launched an investigation into illicit activities by the National Rifle Association’s Rhode Island PAC which resulted in the NRA dissolving its RI PAC and paying a $63,000 fine. This was the second largest campaign finance penalty in state history.

“I’m glad to have stood up for the people of Rhode Island against the powerful, out-of-state gun lobby,” said Bell. “I’ll continue to protect my constituents against the forces of special interests on Smith Hill.

“I’ve been a tireless supporter of progressive values my whole life, and I ask humbly for the support of District 4 as I take these values to the State House.”
