NEW: Cicilline Responds to Poll Numbers

A Spokeswoman for the campaign of David Cicilline says the Congressman is not surprised by his low approval rating in the latest Fleming poll, which was released Thursday night.

In the poll, which consisted of 300 registered voters in the 1st District, Cicilline trailed both John Loughlin and Brendan Doherty by double digits. His unfavorable numbers, largely considered difficult to overcome, stood at 57 percent.

Nicole Kaynor, Cicilline’s spokeswoman, said the poll reflects disagreement over decisions Cicilline made as Mayor of Providence, not the work he’s done in his first five months representing the 1st District.

“Congressman Cicilline is not surprised by the results of this poll,” Kaynor said. “There has been a tremendous amount of coverage about the Providence budget and he believes this poll reflects some disagreement about some of the decisions he made in Providence, rather than his work as a new Member of Congress for the past 5 months. He intends to continue to work hard every single day to earn the support and trust of the people in our district by doing everything he can to get Rhode Islanders back to work and rebuilding our state's economy.”

The poll was commissioned by WPRI-12.
