NEW: City Council Candidate Long Files Ethics Complaint Against Solomon

Ward 1 candidate Michael Long
Providence City Council candidate Michael Long has filed a complaint with the Rhode Island Ethics Commission against Providence City Council President and mayoral candidate Michael Solomon.

Long, a police officer and combat veteran who is running in Ward 1, alleges that Solomon committed 25 separation ethics violations and "has displayed gross negligence in failing to to meet the reporting requirements of the [Ethics Commission]."

"Unfortunately, City Council President Michael Solomon has demonstrated he is either incapable of properly filing the required documents with the accurate information requested per the Ethics Commission, or he has served as an elected official with intolerable levels of ignorance," said Long.

Ethics Violations Alleged

Long's allegations include 19 instances of non-disclosure of mortgages held by Solomon, and six instances of not disclosing a business interest he has with an agency which he has legislative authority.

"One of the mortgages is to the Providence Economic Development Partnership (PEDP), a city agency which Solomon in his official capacity has authority over," said Long.  "He has a duty to report this relationship every year."

Long told GoLocal, "A lot of this came to light through Jim Hummel and GoLocal's reporting, so using my policing I looked through all the public records bit by bit.  It just needed someone to take the next step."

As for next steps, Long said, "This goes before the [Ethics Committee] executive.  If they decide this warrants investigation, it goes before the committee, which is on the 18th."
