New Complaint Filed Against Anti-Casino Group

The rendering of proposed changes to Newport Grand, if the table games referendum is successful.
A new complaint has been filed with the Board of Elections against the Concerned Citizens Against Casino Gambling (CCACG) In Newport -- and the anti-casino group has fired back in response.

In a letter from Newport Grand employee Cathy Rayner to RI Board of Elections Director of Campaign Finance Richard Thornton dated September 26, Rayner referenced the "small, wealthy anti-casino lobbying group" -- and alleged that the group had incurred previous reporting violations in 2012, when the table games ballot referendum did not pass in the City of Newport.

CCACG is working to defeat the Newport Grand table games referendum once again this November.

2012 Allegations

"I looked on the Internet for their 2012 filings and there was some disturbing activity," wrote Rayner.

"CCACG was an illegal entity in 2012 when they were spending money to derail the future of Newport Grand.  Their corporate charter was actually revoked on 4/13/12 and it was not reinstated on 11/16/12.  Isn't there a legal requirment that an entity making an expenditure must be a legal entity?"

Rayner goes on to state that the group received prior notices of corporate revocation, and failed to disclose accurate information on donors and donations.

"There is a lot at stake in this election for families like mine in Newport and we can't let a few rich elites try to steal away our city's middle class," wrote Rayner.

CCACG Responds

CCACG Campaign Coordinator Liz Taber responded to the allegations in the letter on Thursday.

"CCACG is committed to transparency which is why we'd like to know who the investors are behind the "Jobs for Newport" campaign. Right now, the Jobs for Newport's campaign finance reports simply list a contribution from one large donor. A corporation that popped up over night in January to mislead the legislature and the public related to casino gambling," said Taber.

"CCACG is committed to long-lasting economic growth for the city and the state, which is why we've opposed state reliance on this unstable revenue stream since 1977. We look forward to continuing to educate our community about the risks of the casino expansion with the support of our hundreds of Newport volunteers and donors."
