NEW: Doherty Supports Woonsocket War Memorial Against Critics

Brendan Doherty, Republican candidate from Rhode Island’s First Congressional District today released the following statement of support for the Woonsocket War Memorial that has been criticized by an out-of-state advocacy group as a violation of the US Constitution’s prohibition against establishment of religion:

“I applaud Mayor Fontaine and other City officials who are rejecting calls from an overzealous, out-of-state group to remove or modify the World War I monument in Woonsocket,” commented Doherty.  “While it is incumbent upon all elected officials to respect the U.S. Constitution’s prohibition against establishment of religion, over-zealous attacks in the name of ‘separation of church and state’ can cost taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars in needless legal fees and tear apart the fabric of a community.  Each day, we are faced with numerous historic and cultural symbols that may remind us of the faith and spirituality of the generations of Americans who shaped and supported our local communities, the State of Rhode Island and the United States.”

“The Woonsocket monument is dedicating to the memory of patriots who pledged their lives in defense of the United Stated,” continued Doherty.  “The cross that adorns this monument was an important symbol for the lifestyle and freedoms they fought to protect and therefore we should honor and cherish that symbol.  We must not diminish the historical and cultural significance of their contributions in an ill-advised effort to eliminate all public reference to religion and faith.  Our elected officials should seek to find common ground among disparate opinions, but true leaders know that we must stand up for the fundamental principles of our society.  I stand in support of the people of Woonsocket who wish to protect the historic and cultural significance of the War Memorial and maintain common sense in preserving our constitutionally guaranteed freedom of religion.”
