NEW: General Assembly OKs Bake Sales at RI Polls

The House of Representatives today gave final passage to a Senate bill that will allow bake sales to operate near polling places in Rhode Island.
The bill, 2015-S 0058, had been introduced by Sen. Frank Lombardi, and now goes to the Governor Raimondo for her consideration. The companion House bill, 2015-H 5261, sponsored by Rep. Stephen Ucci has passed the House and awaits final Senate action.
GET THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS HERE -- SIGN UP FOR GOLOCAL FREE DAILY EBLAST“I am really very happy for the Cranston PTOs and other school organizations around the state that have used these events to raise money for worthy causes,” said Senator Lombardi, who introduced the bill in response to a decision by the state election board at last November’s election barring Cranston PTOs from conducting bake sales at the polling places.
“These bakes sales had been going on for years without any incidents or problems,” Lombardi continued. “Raising money to provide a better and broader education for our school children is something PTOs are committed to doing, and as long as those events were not hindering people from casting their votes, I saw no reason to prevent them from taking place.”
State law has prohibited bake sales at or near polling places unti now.
