NEW: Lorne Adrain Announces Candidacy for Mayor of Providence

One week after filing papers indicating he would run for mayor as a Democrat, Lorne Adrain made it official today by announcing his candidacy for Mayor of Providence in a letter addressed to the Providence community.

“I’d like to lead Providence, to unleash our vast potential. I’m prepared to make tough decisions to break through the barriers that slow us down. I’d like your ideas, your support and your partnership in shaping a powerful new direction for this great city,” wrote Adrain, former chairman of the R.I. Board of Governors for Higher Education.

Adrain’s Vision for Providence

According to Adrain, who has never held public office, he envisions a Providence that meets the following criteria:

  • Provide all of its children with an education that inspires them early and helps them realize their potential
  • Attract new jobs and creates opportunities for people in every neighborhood to pursue their dreams
  • Lead the way in customer service, business friendliness and creative collaboration
  • Support healthcare options that help children and families live healthy, productive and satisfying lives
  • Meet the needs of today while having the courage to ensure a sustainable future
  • Call on each citizen to step up to help each other and to do more to make a great community

 

“The history of Providence is filled with extraordinary examples of leadership, ingenuity, and possibility,” wrote Adrain. “We have unmatched resources. Our people come from hundreds of countries, armed with imagination, energy and determination. We are a city that is the perfect size to explore and test possibilities, to challenge the status quo, to make things happen. This is the history of Providence we all know and love. This is the history that, working together, can be our future as well."

Background

Adrain grew up in Warwick, graduated from Warwick Vets High, and went on to attend URI and Harvard Business School. He is a former AT&T executive and has served on several nonprofits board in Rhode Island including Social Venture Partners RI, RI Area Coalition for Excellence, and the Rhode Island Foundation, which he is the director of. Adrain is currently a managing director at Ballentine Partners, a national wealth advisory firm. Adrain has lived in Providence for the past 20 years and currently resides on the East Side.

2014 Providence Mayoral Race

In addition to Adrain, the current field of Democratic mayoral candidates includes City Council President Michael Solomon, former Housing Court Judge Jorge Elorza, and former Chair of the Providence Water Supply Board Brett Smiley. Former Acting Mayor of Providence John Lombardi has also expressed interest in the position, which GoLocal reported last week.

The winner of the Democratic Primary will face Republican Dr. Daniel Harrop, who is running for mayor for the third time.
