NEW: MacBeth Switches Parties to GOP, Mattiello to Replace as Oversight Chair

Rep. Karen MacBeth has left the Democratic Party for the RI GOP.
The Rhode Island Republican Party has welcomed former Democratic State Representative Karen Macbeth to its ranks on Monday -- and Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello has said she's out as House Oversight Committee Chair.

“I was informed this afternoon by Representative MacBeth that she is switching affiliation to the Republican Party.  Since a chairmanship is a leadership position, I will be replacing her," said Mattiello.

MacBeth was one of the Democrats who voted against the leadership on truck tolls, and had been leading the 38 Studios investigation as Chair of the Oversight Committee.

Macbeth Making Switch

Macbeth, who is the Principal at Harris Elementary School in Woonsocket, was first elected to District 52 in Cumberland in 2008.

"We are proud to welcome a fearless leader, Representative Karen MacBeth, to the Republican ranks," said RI GOP Chair Brandon Bell on Monday.  "In her 8 years as a legislator, Representative MacBeth has been honest, independent-minded and courageous.  Karen has been relentless in investigating the 38 Studios debacle as Chairwoman of House Oversight Committee.  She has also been honest and fearless in her opposition to the toxic tolling plan."

"2016 is shaping up to be a great year for the RI Republican Party after the election of Senator John Pagliarini and the party switch by Representative Karen MacBeth," said Bell.
