Newport Councilor and Former “Mayor Xay” Considering Run for Lt. Governor
Democrat "Xay" would face among potential primary opponents incumbent Sabina Matos.
Matos, as Lt. Governor, had run for the first congressional district seat when David Cicilline resigned to take a job as head of the Rhode Island Foundation.

“I’m looking at any and all opportunities to ensure the time I’m spending in public service has the maximum possible impact,” Xay told GoLocal about next steps.
“That includes considering whether or not that possible impact is continuing to serve in Newport, or statewide public office, which includes the Lt. Governor’s office," he confirmed.
Following his election in 2022, Xay was unanimously voted in by the body as Council Chair and Mayor.
In 2024, he was re-elected to the City Council as a Councilor At-Large.
