NEW: Planned Parenthood Urges Defeat of Reproductive Health Bills

Planned Parenthood Votes! Rhode Island (PPV!RI) called on the Rhode Island General Assembly Tuesday to defeat a package of bills that they claim would adversely affect women’s access to reproductive health care and focus on policies and programs that empower women and families.

The House Judiciary committee will hear eleven bills relating to abortion on Tuesday, five of which politicize reproductive health.

“Women don’t turn to politicians for advice about mammograms, prenatal care or cancer treatments. Politicians should not be involved in a woman’s personal medical decisions about her pregnancy,” said Judy Tabar President & CEO of Planned Parenthood Votes! Rhode Island. “A majority of voters also agree that the decision as to whether a woman should choose adoption, end a pregnancy, or raise a child must be left to the woman, her family and her faith, with the counsel of her doctor.”

Women's issues at forefront of state legislatures

The hearing comes at time when women’s issues are at the forefront of state legislatures across the country and where a number of state based restrictions have sought to make abortion inaccessible in states like Texas, North Carolina, Oklahoma and North Dakota. Examples of these bills include mandatory ultrasounds and images before performing abortion; a resolution that insinuates personhood through a heartbeat; and a roll back of commercial coverage for abortion in privately purchased health care plans.

“In the same year where our legislative leaders called for the state to come together to focus on creating jobs and improving our economy, we are asking politicians to pass legislation that reflects the desire of Rhode Island voters,” said Paula Hodges Public Policy & Governmental Relations Director of PPV!RI. “The General Assembly should refocus on policies that empower women to access quality, affordable health care; maintain and sustain our successful health exchange; protect women’s confidential information when going into Crisis Pregnancy Centers; and repeal antiquated, unenforceable laws such as spousal consent and banning abortion coverage for public employees.”
