Rhode Island General Treasurer Gina Raimondo officially kicked off her bid to be the next Governor of Rhode Island at Hope Artiste Village, to a packed crowd in the historic mill in Pawtucket.

Raimondo, who had indicated her intention to run in December via video announcement, made it official today with family, friends, and supporters in attendance, where she unveiled a jobs and economic plan called a "bold, innovative approach."    "Our children deserve a Rhode Island where it doesn't matter who you know, it matters what you know -- and how hard you're willing to work," Raimondo told the crowd.

Dozens of protesters stood outside with signs, including representatives from the Rhode Island State Association of Firefighters.

Rhode Island State Senator Donna Nesselbush opened the event, noting the location of the launch being at the Hope Artiste Village was a Rhode Island story of "restoration and innovation."

Speakers that followed included Rhode Island Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts, Rhode Island State Representative Grace Diaz, as well as Tim Byrne with the New England plumbers and pipefitters union.

"The can was kicked down the road for too many years," said Byrne, of Raimondo addressing comprehensive pension reform, which is currently the subject of mediated lawsuit.  "It's not going to be easy, but we're going to step forward."

Raimondo took to the stage to applause, telling supporters, "It's going to require a Democratic governor with heart and a lot of hard work,o pull us together so we can rise together."

Among the platform items put forth by Raimondo included a "Rhode Island Innovation Institute" to be responsible for "researching and developing new applied sciences, particularly in areas poised to grow like biotech, food science, and marine technologies."

Protesting the event were the Rhode Island State Association of Firefighters, who in October endorsed Providence Mayor -- and Democratic gubernatorial opponent -- Angel Taveras.

Signs held included, "$53 million in first year to Wall Street friends" and "67 year old firefighter equals disaster," referring to Raimondo's pension reform.
