Political Profile: Dennis Huard, Candidate for State Rep. in District 57

1. What do you think is the biggest political issue this campaign season in Rhode Island?

Gas, food, and utilities are all becoming more costly for everyone, while at the same time our paychecks are getting smaller. Education would have to rank highly as well. We as a state are steadily falling in the national rankings. We need to do better for our children and address these issues quickly.
2. What do we need to do to improve Rhode Island's economy?
The simple answer to improving the economy is to lower taxes. Focusing on personal and small businesses. Small businesses are an integral part of our communities and they are being forced to compete with big corporations. We need to find a way to give them a chance to succeed. Lowering personal taxes creates more expendable money for people to put into the economy. The harder answer is looking at our spending to find those areas that can be cleaned up or streamlined.
3. What is the greatest challenge facing Rhode Island as a state?
Historically, Rhode Island has led the way through great changes in the country. Whether it was the sinking of the Gaspee at the start of The Revolutionary War, or the use of the Blackstone River for the Industrial Revolution. One of the greatest challenges we face today is getting back to that mindset of leading the way. We have all heard for years the jokes about our state government. It's time to change that. We can't keep voting in the same people and expecting things to change. Together we can lead the way to the people being represented again. It will take you, the voter, changing your choices and voting for a change.
4. Why are you running for office? What makes you uniquely qualified?
I am running for office because I believe that the people of my district should be fairly represented. The people have to come first and their voices need to be heard. I believe that together we can create a strong community that sets an example of how things should be done. I don't want to be that representative that you only see or hear from every couple years out looking for signatures. The status quo doesn't work any more. There needs to be change and I want to hear from you and bring your concerns and needs to the forefront.
5. Who is your inspiration?
I am drawing inspiration from the many people that have come before me that recognized something was wrong and stepped up to be the one to start changing how things were done. Their efforts and determination have lead to great things in this state and our country. Together we can continue that tradition here at home.
