Potential RI First Congressional District Candidates to Replace Cicilline

L-R Speaker Joe Shekarchi, Lt. Governor Sabina Matos, Helena Foulkes, Central Falls Mayor Maria Rivera, and Attorney General Peter Neronha.
With the announcement Tuesday by David Cicilline that he is quitting the U.S. House of Representatives, one of Rhode Island's cherished seats in Congress is up for grabs.

Cicilline, who had a difficult time managing the city of Providence's finances as Mayor in the 2000s, is being hired to take over the Rhode Island Foundation.

When Cicilline left the Providence Mayor's office in 2011 to take the first Congressional seat after a narrow victory over Republican John Loughlin, the city's finances were in chaos.

Cicilline's announcement opens the door for a plethora of candidates to take a "free shot" in a crowded Democratic primary.

Cicilline won the 2022 Democratic primary with under 50,000 votes, so in a crowded Democratic primary, a candidate could potentially win with as little as just 10,000 votes.

GoLocal has spoken to more than 20 potential candidates, Democratic consultants, and political insiders.

Only two politicians told GoLocal they were not running -- Loughlin, who now is on talk radio and works for the Veteran's Hospital, and Providence Mayor Brett Smiley.
