Prov Police & Firefighters Retirement Association Endorse Witman for Mayor

Dee Dee Witman
The Providence Police and Firefighters’ Retirement Association is endorsing Dianne “Dee Dee” Witman for Mayor.

The group voted unanimously to endorse Witman on Monday night.

“Providence has close to 49% of its property off of the tax rolls, and Dee Dee Witman understands how crucial it is to the future of our city that everyone pays their fair share,” said Tom Johnston, President of the Providence Police and Firefighters’ Retirement Association and former President of the Providence Firefighters Union.

Johnston added, “When everybody pays their fair share, everyone prospers. The city’s financial burden should not fall on the taxpayers or on the retired police and firefighters, who gave countless years in service to the city. Times have changed, and we must be fair to our workers.”

The group represents more than 1,500 members, and is the second public safety organization to endorse Witman, after the endorsement from the Providence Police Union.

About the endorsements, Witman said, “Our retired police and firefighters have in-depth knowledge about this city that no one else has. They were on the front lines of serving our city, with enormous courage and dedication, for many years, and it is time we make sure our city works for them as well as every other resident. I am grateful to have their support as I work to initiate new partnerships with our universities and non-profits that would result in lessening the current tax burden on Providence residents.”
