Raimondo Claims Brown Campaign is $300K in Debt; Brown Fires Back on Raimondo Loans

Matt Brown (L) and Gina Raimondo (R)
Governor Gina Raimondo's campaign is claiming that gubernatorial candidate Matt Brown “owes three times the amount of cash his campaign has on hand.”

According to the Raimondo campaign, Brown only has about $80,000 cash on hand and owes nearly $300,000 to campaign staff, consultants and loan repayments.

Raimondo press secretary Emily Samsel says “We can't trust Matt Brown with our state’s nine billion dollar budget and more than 10,000 employees -- he can’t even pay his few campaign staff on time. Matt Brown’s most recent fundraising report should be a red flag for voters. Imagine the damage this kind of financial mismanagement could do to Rhode Island.”

Raimondo's comments come a day after Brown announced his five-part "Plan to Take Back Rhode Island" and placed Governor Raimondo at the center of the state's corruption.

Raimondo has more than $2.4 million cash-on-hand. But Brown's campaign says Raimondo has lent her own campaign.

"This distorted claim includes the loans Matt has made to his own campaign, something Raimondo has done herself in the form of $150,000 over her past two elections. The claim also doesn’t reflect the nearly $60,000 dollars in expenses we have written and mailed checks for and vendors have yet to cash," said Communications Director Juliet Barbara

"This report reflects a point in time accounting of our finances. As required, we have reported all our expenditures as they happen, including tens of thousands of dollars in checks that we've already mailed and vendors have yet to cash. Until the funds clear our bank account they remain reported as accounts payable, though we have no control over when vendors deposit checks they receive," said Barbara.

According to Brown's campaign documents filed with the RI Board of Election, his campaign's financial situation is:

Total Cash: $107,411.21
Total Liabilities: $286,835.95

Beginning Balance: $49,422.57
Ending Balance: $91,760.45
