With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Raimondo has defeated Republican contender Allan Fung, with 40.2 percent (123,460 votes) over 36.3 percent (111,291 votes) and Moderate Party contender Bob Healey.

She is the first woman Governor in Rhode Island and the first newly elected Democrat since 1992.

Gina Raimondo grew up in Scituate. She boasts extremely impressive educational credentials, graduating as Valedictorian from La Salle High School. and then going on to graduate from Yale, Harvard, and Oxford.

She then went on to found a venture capital company, Point Judith Capital, located in Rhode Island.

Raimondo was elected General Treasurer in 2010 and was the state’s highest vote getter that year. She made her mark as General Treasure by passing a historic, albeit controversial pension reform bill in 2011. The move was hailed by government reformers because it lowered the state’s unfunded liability by roughly $4 billion dollars, but cut benefits for current and future state retirees and their spouses.

She declared for Governor in early 2014 and raised and spent a remarkable $5 million on the primary alone. She cruised to victory over fellow Democrats Clay Pell and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras. She defeats Cranston Mayor and Republican Allan Fung as well as Robert Healey in the general election, by a margin of roughly 40-36-21 percent.
