On Monday, POLITICO reported that the Supreme Court would strike down the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, according to an initial draft majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito circulated inside the court and obtained by the news site.

"The draft opinion is a full-throated, unflinching repudiation of the 1973 decision which guaranteed federal constitutional protections of abortion rights and a subsequent 1992 decision – Planned Parenthood v. Casey – that largely maintained the right. ‘Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,' Alito writes," according to the site.

The news rocked the American political scene as the opinion would overturn the law of the land for the past five decades.

RI Democrats React

Corporate CEO Helena Buonanno Foulkes, Democratic Candidate for Governor

“What a horrific moment in our nation’s history. It has literally never been more important that Rhode Island has a governor who will fight every single day to protect abortion access for all.”

Governor Dan McKee, Democratic Candidate for Governor

"Here in Rhode Island, we will always protect a woman’s right to choose. We will NOT go backwards on reproductive rights."

"Access to abortion is a fundamental right. Throughout my life I’ve worked with others to protect this right. Tonight’s news of the anticipated overturn of 50 yrs of protecting this right is devastating. We must pass RI’s Equality in Abortion Act."

Former RI Secretary of State, Matt Brown, Democratic Candidate for Governor

“Reproductive freedom for millions of Americans is at risk. We have to do everything in our power to protect the right to an abortion.”

RI General Treasurer, Seth Magaziner, Democratic Candidate for Congress in the Second Congressional District

"This ruling, if enacted, will be a horrible tragedy for millions of women who deserve access to abortion care. We fought together to codify Roe v Wade into state law, and won. Now we must fight even harder to codify Roe into federal law. Let's get to work."

Sarah Morgenthau, Democratic Candidate for Congress in the Second Congressional District

"It is now more important than ever to have women representing women in Congress to protect Roe v. Wade. You have the power to send a pro-choice woman to Washington who will always protect your reproductive rights. The fight is not over."

RI GOP Side

None of the leading Republican leaders issued any comment on the POLITICO report.

Neither GOP Gubernatorial candidate Ashley Kalus, nor second congressional candidate Allan Fung issued a statement.
