Russell Moore: This Year’s Scrooge Award Goes to…

There was some stout competition, but this year’s first annual Scrooge award, presented by yours truly, goes to Cox Communications.

With Christmas in just a couple days, it felt fitting to point out someone or an organization that failed to keep the Christmas spirit and disappointed the community in the process. Granted, that's no easy task, but this year there was no better choice than Cox Communications, which cancelled the telecast of a Toys For Tots drive. That move resulted in more children from low-income families receiving fewer, or, what’s worse, no presents from Santa this Christmas.

Shame on Cox

Over the last 20 years, Rhode Island local celebrity Bob Venturini, host of two popular public access television shows, has hosted a telethon at the Warwick Mall to raise money and collect toys for Toys For Tots. And thanks to the generous nature of Rhode Islanders, he’s always done a tremendous job. In fact, his telethon, which takes place for just 4 hours on one day, has historically been the top Toys For Tots fundraiser in the region.

Yet on December 9th, just one day before the telethon was supposed to take place, Venturini received a call from someone at Cox Communications alerting him that the show must not go on. For some reason, and it reportedly had something to do with technology, the company could not do a live broadcast the show on the evening of December 10th. The show was scheduled to be broadcast on Cox channel 15.

For their part, they did have their own fundraiser that raised money for children in need.

Honor Your Responsibility

On every bill Cox Communications sends out, there’s a surcharge that's assessed to support community programming—just like the annual Toys For Tots drive. If Cox Communications can cancel a program that benefits our community, just what exactly are we paying for? And how, exactly, can a company that specializes in digital communications not have the technology to broadcast a toy drive from a mall?

These questions boggle the mind. The whole situation was more frustrating than watching the New England Patriots secondary try and cover opposing receivers.

Venturini, who ran for Lieutenant Governor in 2010, but is clearly better known for his public access television shows, told The Coalition Radio talk show, on 1320 a.m. radio, that he went across the state promoting the show as a telethon, but without the cameras and the broadcast, and thanks to Cox Communications, it wasn’t a telethon at all.

Anyone who watches Venturini's show knows he's a gentleman who never says a bad thing about anyone. So it shouldn't be surprising that when I talked to him last weekend he said he bears no ill will toward Cox Communications. Venturini believes it was an honest misunderstanding and bad timing that prevented the telecast from being aired. He is currently in negotiations to try and bring back the telecast next year.

An Awesome Charity

Here's hoping it does, because if there were ever a worthy charity—one that’s the salt of the earth, it would be Toys For Tots. Run by the US Marines, a whopping 98.5 percent of all the donations go to those in need. That’s one of the beauties of Toys For Tots—there need be no concern that the bulk of the donations would ever go to supporting overpaid executive directors and their cushy lifestyles.

Every toy donated to the charity goes to a child from a family that, were it not for Toys For Tots, and the generosity of the people who support it, wouldn’t get one.

When I was a reporter for The Warwick Beacon, I had the pleasure, for several years, of covering Venturini’s Toy Drive. I always enjoyed seeing a group of people as diverse as Rhode Island itself come together to support such a great cause. It was one of my favorite events of the year.

Obnoxious Maneuver

As obnoxious as it was to cancel the charity drive, it was even worse that they gave Venturini just one day of notice. That level of unprofessionalism is simply jaw dropping. We can be certain that they knew they weren’t going to go forward with the toy drive prior to then. They can’t be that incompetent, right?

The good news, however, is that despite the toy drive wasn’t televised; it still raised $4,000 and plenty of toys. The bad news, is that Venturini estimates that had the show been televised, it would’ve done roughly double.

Unfortunately, Cox Communications had some stout competition they had to best in order to receive my Scrooge Award.

Stiff Competition

The Rhode Island Public Utilities is considering gutting its rules that govern shutoffs—a move that could leave low –income Rhode Islanders in the cold this winter. It’s certainly a story to watch, but the organization recently tabled any consideration of the rules. And then there’s the Cranston Police Department, which went on a ticket issuing rampage after the Democrat controlled Cranston City Council refused to ratify the latest sweetheart deal that Republican Mayor Allan Fung gave them.

But there’s only one winner, and this year it’s Cox Communications. That’s because no child should be forced to find out there’s no such thing as Santa Claus prematurely, especially for economic reasons. Any group that furthers that end is a Scrooge (pre-redemption) if I ever saw one.

Just because Cox Communications is a Scrooge this year doesn't mean we have to be one. Donations to Toys For Tots can still be made by visiting their website at http://providence-ri.toysfortots.org.

It's never too late for redemption.
