Sandra Cano: 14 Who Made a Difference in RI in 2014

Sandra Cano
The seemingly up-and-comer Cano has been the radar screen for some time.  Picked as one of GoLocal's 13 to Watch in 2013, Cano, a Shea High School graduate, had just been the first Latina elected to the Pawtucket School Board.

"Don’t be surprised if the school committee is just the first step in this up-and-comer’s political career," GoLocal wrote on January 1, 2013. "She has already been chosen to represent the United States at the United Nations Commission of Status of Women—a summit to advocate for Woman’s rights— has plenty of insiders calling her a rising star in local politics."

Fast forward to 2014, with Cano ran for Pawtucket City Council, and once again broke barriers to be the first Latina elected to that body. Part of her platform?  Proposing a new initiative for seniors and retirees called RSVP – Retirees and Seniors Volunteering for Pawtucket, based after the Corporation for National and Community Service’s senior volunteer program.

“The City of Pawtucket is blessed to have an active and vibrant community of retirees and seniors," said Cano when she proposed the RSVP program. "Many of these individuals would love to be able to give back to their community but have no outlet to accomplish that goal. This program will be designed to match the many skills of our retiree/senior citizenry with the needs of our community.”

Stay tuned to see what 2015 brings for Cano -- and the residents of Pawtucket.
