Side of the Rhode: Who's Hot and Who's Not?

Every Friday, GoLocalProv.com's Russell Moore breaks down who is rising and falling in RI politics, business, and everything RI.

Hot

Mayor-Elect Jorge Elorza
Jorge Elorza: Elroza hosted the first 'One Providence' listening forums last night. It was a wise move to hold these forums and it signals that the Mayor-elect is keeping an open mind, and will listen to his critics, which woud be a breath of fresh air in politics.

Regulate Rhode Island: The forward-thinking coalition of Rhode Islanders who are working to end marijuana prohibition in our state held a successful forum earlier this week. Those in attendance pointed out that legalizing and taxing marijuana would add revenue to the state's coffers and stop imprisoning people for victimless crimes.

Angelo's: The iconic, old-school Italian eatery celebrated its 90th birthday earlier this week. The legions of Angelo's fans who have dined there for decades, like myself, are hoping the restaurant remains in business for another 90 years.

Alex and Ani
Alex and Ani: The Rhode Island success story continues to do yoeman's charity work. This week, the company donated $1 million to URI to fund research into natural product research, which will encourage the discovery of plant-based molecules to help enhance human well-being. The company also landed naming rights to the Providence Ice Skating rink taking over for Bank of America who abandoned the Superman Building and the ice rink.

Deepwater Wind:  The company announced it cleared its last regulatory hurdle at the Coastal Resources Management Council this week. That means the construction jobs and alternative energy that the states needs will be forthcoming. The project’s lead federal permitting agency, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACORE), has granted its approval of the Block Island Wind Farm.

With ACORE’s permit, the Block Island Wind Farm has now been completely reviewed, and approved, by 11 state and federal agencies

Pat's newest star, Jonas Gray
The New England Patriots: Don't look now die-hard New England Sports fans, but the Patriots are currently the bosses of the AFC. They've got huge wins over quality opponents and have shown they can win on the road and, dare I say it, they're looking like a superbowl contender. Gotta love a guy who was on the practice squad a month ago running for 201 yards.

NOT

Patrick Lynch: The New York Times reported that former Attorney General Patrick Lynch apparently lobbied his old office in recent years but never registered as a lobbyist. You'd be hard pressed to find a nicer guy in politics than Patrick Lynch, but he should know better than to make such an oversight. That's not hot.

Patrick Lynch, former AG

Gina Raimondo: GoLocalProv.com recently reported that the Governor-elect's transition team is dominated by finance industry professionals. There's this perception out there that Raimondo is too heavily influenced by the financial sector, and these appointments do nothing but further it.

DCYF Computers: It was reported this week that the Department of Children, Youth, and Families are still using computers that are operating on Windows 98 systems. That's ridiculous in the 2014 and speaks to the antiquated ways of doing business in our state government.

Lincoln Chafee: In an article that featured an interview with Governor Lincoln Chafee as he prepares to leave office, Jim Vincent, the President of the Rhode Island NAACP made a very astute point, Chafee failed to make good on his 2010 campaign promises to promote diversity. Vincent pointed out that the number of individuals of color in his cabinet is as low as recent memory can recall.

Polar Vortex: The chilling temperatures forced down by a chilling blast of Artic air has arrived for a second time in two years, sending chilling temperatures across the country, and that included Rhode Island. That's the antithesis of hot!
