'Taxes Chafee' Signs Littered Around the State

The Rhode Island Democratic Party has distributed mock Lincoln Chafee campaign signs around the state, with "trust" crossed out and replaced with "taxes" - a reference to Chafee's proposal for a one percent sales tax. GoLocalProv found several of the signs in Providence near the routes 6 and 10 interchange.

Stephanie DeSilva, the executive director of the state Democratic Party, said the signs were meant to draw attention to Chafee's tax plan, which she said would hurt Rhode Island families. "[We just can't] burden them anymore," DeSilva said. "We wanted to make sure we reminded voters of that."

"Obviously, we wanted to do it in a clever way," DeSilva added.

She said the Democratic Party has sprinkled hundreds of the signs throughout the state yesterday.

Chafee Campaign Manager Mike Trainor denounced the signs. "This is an idea that would have made it beyond the blue sky session of the college interns here. It's low road and simplistic", Trainor told 630 WPRO, a GoLocalProv media partner. Trainor said the campaign is not taking any action to have the signs removed.
