Hotly contested races are nothing new in Rhode Island, but Ocean Staters took notice when 21-year old Republican Dan Reilly defeated Deputy Majority Leader Amy Rice, who has represented District 72 for the past six years. Despite being accused of violating of Rhode Island General Law 36-4-51, which states that "[no] classified employee ... shall seek the nomination of or be a candidate for any elective state office," not to mention campaign finance violations, plus his family capturing the media spotlight for financial problems, voters in Middletown, Newport and Portsmouth gave Reilly the edge by 267 votes, making him the one of the youngest members to serve in RI's House of Representatives.
