Trillo Blasts RI GOP for Endorsing Fung at State Convention

Joe Trillo
Independent gubernatorial candidate Joe Trillo is reaffirming his decision to leave the Republican Party just days after the state convention.

On Wednesday night, the convention endorsed Allan Fung for Governor.

Trillo served as a National Committeeman for the Rhode Island Republican Party during the 2016 election.

Trillo released the following statement:

“As a party loyalist, you are expected to support the endorsed candidate and eventual nominee, which I have always done throughout my career. In 2014, I supported and even contributed to Allan Fung’s gubernatorial campaign before I knew the real person he was. After learning about the borderline criminal enterprise Fung was running and his lack of effective leadership [evidenced in the State Police Report], I could no longer support him as a candidate for any legitimate office in Rhode Island, let alone the Governor’s office.

Instead of endorsing Fung again for the 2018 Election, his actions should have given the party a clear message to stay away and pick anyone else. The party has made a regrettable mistake endorsing a grossly unqualified candidate, which is one of many reasons I left the party. I felt I could no longer support, or be a part of a state party whose leadership chooses to turn a blind eye to blatant corruption, and continuously supports a candidate that has never displayed a hint of integrity.

I felt that I would compromise my political convictions if I stayed part of an organization that chooses morally bankrupt individuals, such as Fung, to lead the party as a candidate for the state’s highest office. I wanted to break free from the shackles of party politics and focus on working for the people of Rhode Island. The two-party system is broken in our state; this is why I am an Independent, to focus on the people of this great state, not politics.”
